2014 and the GOP’s Wakeup
The year 2014 proved to be a year of true gains for the Republican Party stateside and in Puerto Rico. Republicans have been gaining momentum ever since the 2010 electoral wave and it was this year that conservatives have made America wake up and start paving the road towards the White House. In part this can be pointed to President Barack Obama’s policies, which have harvested and added more voters to our party’s base.
Obamacare’s failure and impact on the economy, the bad handling of foreign policy and unfulfilled promises have been crucial in diminishing the little influence the Democratic Party was beginning to acquire. The public’s opinion did not approve of the Democrats’ handling of the country and voters turned out in November to vote out those politicians that were gladiators of the President’s policies. To many people’s surprise, Republicans were able to gain their biggest majority in the House of Representatives since the times of President Herbert Hoover and the Senate went on to the GOP’s hands with an unpredicted majority of seats. The party of Lincoln has continued to surprise many by electing its first black Congresswoman, re-electing a black Senator, and keeping two Hispanic Senators.
In Puerto Rico, the Republican Party has started visiting communities all over the state, bringing the message of economic liberty, small government and full rights for the American citizens that reside in the island. On July 27, the Puerto Rico GOP commemorated its founder’s birth and rallied along with thousands of conservatives to demand statehood for Puerto Rico. Following this enthusiasm, the Chairman of the RNC, Reince Preibus, restated the party’s support towards statehood. Before 2014 ended, the College Republican National Committee held its annual meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In this meeting they voted to officially recognize and admit the College Republican Federation of Puerto Rico into their organization.
The year 2014 has been a year of hard work, but undoubtedly it paid off. The Republican Party’s principles are becoming the country’s guiding star and the issue of the status of Puerto Rico is becoming an American issue.
2014 – El Partido Republicano resurge
El año 2014 ha sido un año de ganancias para el Partido Republicano a nivel nacional y en Puerto Rico. Los republicanos han ganado fuerza desde la ola electoral del 2010 y fue en éste año que los conservadores han hecho a Estados Unidos despertar y trazar el camino hacia la Casa Blanca. Esto en parte se le puede atribuir a las políticas del Presidente Barack Obama, las cuales han cultivado y añadido más votantes a la base de nuestro partido.
Los fallos del Obamacare y su impacto en la economía, el mal manejo de la política exterior y promesas incumplidas han sido cruciales en disminuir la poca influencia que había ganado el Partido Demócrata. La opinión pública no se mostró favorable a la manera en que los demócratas tomaban las riendas de la nación y en noviembre salieron a votar en contra de aquellos políticos que se habían alineado con el Presidente Obama. Para la sorpresa de muchos, los republicanos lograron capturar su mayoría más grande desde los tiempos del Presidente Herbert Hoover, y el Senado pasó a las manos del GOP con una mayoría que no se esperaba. El partido de Lincoln ha continuado sorprendiendo a muchos al elegir su primera Congresista negra, reeligieron a un Senador negro y aún mantienen dos Senadores hispanos.
En Puerto Rico, el Partido Republicano ha comenzado a visitar comunidades alrededor del estado, llevando el mensaje de libertad económica, gobierno pequeño y plenos derechos para los ciudadanos americanos que residen en la isla. En julio 27, el GOP de Puerto Rico conmemoró el nacimiento de su fundador y marcharon junto a miles de conservadores para pedir la estadidad para Puerto Rico. Siguiendo éste entusiasmo, el Presidente del Partido Republicano Nacional, Reince Priebus, volvió a enfatizar el apoyo del partido a la estadidad. Antes de que acabara el 2014, el Comité Nacional de Universitarios Republicanos llevaron a cabo su reunión anual en San Juan, Puerto Rico. En éste encuentro votaron para reconocer oficialmente y admitir a la Federación de Universitarios de Puerto Rico al organismo.
El año 2014 ha sido un año de trabajo arduo, pero sin duda alguna se recogieron los frutos de esa labor. Los principios del Partido Republicano son el guía de la nación y el asunto del status de Puerto Rico comienza a verse como un asunto nacional.
