RNC Statement on the 157th Anniversary of Dr. José Celso Barbosa

Washington, DC – As we celebrate the 157th anniversary of Dr. José Celso Barbosa, the founding father of the Republican Party of Puerto Rico. The RNC Chairman Reince Priebus issued the following statement:

“For over seventy years, the Republican Party has stood with the US citizens of Puerto Rico. We believe Puerto Ricans should have the right to determine their own political future and we are glad Puerto Rico’s liberal governor has finally changed his mind and is working toward a binding referendum. Governor Garcia-Padilla and his party have adopted an anti-democratic policy refusing to honor the 2012 statehood vote, and even opposing a federally sponsored vote to confirm the 2012 results. This matters to us because Republicans support Puerto Rico having a binding referendum that allows for United States citizens of Puerto Rico to be admitted to the Union as a fully sovereign state after they freely so determine.”

“Por más de 70 años, el Partido Republicano de Los Estados Unidos ha apoyado a los ciudadanos americanos de Puerto Rico. Creemos que los Puertorriqueños deben tener el derecho a determinar su propio futuro político y nos alegramos que el gobernador liberal de Puerto Rico finalmente haya cambiado de parecer y este trabajando para lograr un referendo vinculante. El recién electo gobernador García Padilla y su partido han adoptado una política anti democrática rehusando honrar el voto a favor de la estadidad del 2012 y hasta oponiéndose a un referendo auspiciado por el gobierno federal para confirmar las aspiraciones expresadas por los resultados del 2012. Esto es importante para nosotros porque los republicanos apoyamos que Puerto Rico celebre un referendo vinculante que permita a los ciudadanos americanos de Puerto Rico ser admitidos a la Unión como un estado soberano luego que así libremente lo determinen.”
